Located about 110 miles west of Los Angeles, the region has been heavily influenced by such celebrities such as Bob Hope, who brought the Bob Hope Classic Pro-Am to the valley in 1960. Star power like Bing Crosby, Desi Arnez and President Dwight D. Eisenhower have all competed in the legendary event.
The desert valley extends 45 miles between the San Bernadino and Santa Rosa mountains, south towards the saltwater Salton Sea, California's largest lake. A collection of communities make up what is often grouped together as "Palm Springs" including La Quinta, Indian Wells, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage - all of which golf plays a major role in the way the each was planned.
Between January and April, few spots on earth are better for desert golf, with more than 100 golf courses ranging from exclusive private clubs to resort courses and over-achieving municipal plays. Locals enjoy steep discounts in their respective municipalities, while vacationers from northern climates can enjoy the same rye and bent grass they play back home, only with palm trees and spectacular mountain backdrops.
In the winter months, afternoon highs still peak out around 70 degrees, making for ideal hiking and biking weather in the mountains when off the golf course. In the summer, highs can reach the 120s, and most snowbirds head back north and the valley's population shrinks significantly. The heat can be intense, but locals find relief in at a shady pool or day spa.
