The ups and downs of The Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrieta
MURRIETA, Calif. -- With elevated tees, washes, hollows and hilly terrain, The Golf Club at Rancho California offers pretty much every variety of shot. And at 7,036 yards from the back tees and with a course rating of 74.6, this Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed golf course is also a pretty good championship test.
Formally known as the SCGA Golf Club, the course has been the home of the California State Open as well as numerous qualifiers and other professional and amateur events.
The golf course was opened for play in 1971 as Murrieta Golf Club, but legal trouble forced the closure of the golf course in the late 1970s. In 1986, it was resurrected by local developer Bill Johnson and was reopened as the Rancho California Golf Club. In 1994, the course was purchased by the SCGA and became the home course for more than 130,000 members and 500 affiliate golf clubs.
