SAN JACINTO, Calif. -- The tents and crowds of the Soboba Golf Classic are gone, but The Country Club at Soboba Springs is cared for well enough to host a proper pro tournament any day.
The Web.com Tour (then the Nationwide Tour) ended its four-year run on the 7,204-yard course in 2012. A young Rickie Fowler shot a course-record 65 on a Friday round in 2009, essentially cashing his first professional check. Brendan Steele, another local PGA Tour pro, played his high school matches at the club.
Soboba Springs has earned its reputation as a tournament-tested layout kept in top condition. The Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians, who run a casino down the road, own Soboba Springs. Architect Cary Bickler gave the original Desmond Muirhead design from the 1960s a modern makeover in 2005.
Water intrudes on 10 holes, none more dramatically than on three par 3s. A mountain backdrop frames the 148-yard fourth hole and 151-yard eighth hole nicely. The 226-yard 15th hole plays downright mean, ranking as the toughest par 3 on tour in 2009.
