Short and scenic: Apple Mountain Golf Resort east of Sacramento
CAMINO, Calif. -- The name Apple Mountain Golf Resort is a bit deceiving. There are no accommodations, just secluded and stunning mountain golf in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains a half-hour's drive east of Sacramento.
The elevated first tee introduces what lies ahead: Try to land a tee shot somewhere near the 150-yard marker. Almost every shot required during the round is a test of target golf. How well can you hit your spots through narrow corridors of towering pines and evergreens?
The 6,308-yard, par-70 golf course at Apple Mountain plays so demanding that the black tee markers aren't even put on the tees. Most golfers try to survive from the 5,990-yard blue tees without losing a sleeve of balls or more. Moments of sheer wonderment help make up for the lost strokes. The elevated tees of the par-5 ninth and par-5 18th holes seem to be suspended in midair hundreds of feet above the fairway.
Many Golf Advisor users give Apple Mountain five stars, more than any other rating. One such golfer, lrrpranger, wrote: "All in all, it is a great target course; if you can stay in fairway and hit good approach shots, you will be rewarded. Great elevated tees and greens with great vistas."
