Grizzly Ranch Golf Club

About
Nestled between the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade ranges, Grizzly Ranch Golf Club is surrounded by over a million acres of national and state forest. The landscape consists of rolling hills, native wetlands, and wildflower fields with ponderosas and Jeffrey pines sprinkled throughout. Grizzly Ranch Golf Club's terrain is mountainous with dramatic elevation changes and numerous valleys lined with trees. Despite the hilliness, the elevation is only 5,200 feet, which allows for warmer temperatures than most of Lake Tahoe. Although it is a challenging golf course, the absence of steep holes and soft pine straw adjoining the fairways that allow for playable lies make Grizzly Ranch forgiving enough for beginning and intermediate players.

6 Hour Round - poor course management
Beautiful, challenging course. Sadly, it was a 6 hour round due to poor course management.
Starter was gruff with both our twosome and separately with the twosome who joined us without prompting.
We waited nearly every hole. At some point we realized there was a group of six playing two groups ahead of us. With three groups playing/waiting on both 12 and 13, The guys on the 12th tee said they were with a group that included the two tee times ahead of them. A group behind us had already quit on the front nine due to slow play.
When I phoned the pro shop, I was told the General Manager of the course was playing in the sixsome, that the group of six was not holding up play, and that they had tried to get the groups of ahead of them to move faster.
They need to book tee times further apart, not allow a group of six, and kick people off the course who take this long to play. There seems to be deliberately poor course management and slow play with special dispensation from the course manager.
Loved This Course!
Played 10 courses in 6 days in the area... this was one of my favorites. Loved that we played it first thing in the morning. Loved that it was out in the middle of nowhere. Loved the design and conditions. Just a great place overall. The clubhouse is also super cool as well as the lodge overlooking the 18th green.
Disappointing
Dry, slow play and definately not worthy of the $145price tag. Friendly staff beautiful surroundings but very disappointing.
GET UP HERE!!!
I really enjoyed playing here. Great layout, superb greens. But there are 2 really dumb holes out there - 12 and 17 both require carry over arroyos at a strange distance from either the tee or green. Other than that, this is a great place to play!
Oh yes - pace of play!!!!! 4.5 hrs - REALLY?!??? Cmon guys. It was a Friday afternoon.
I will definitely be back.
Best Golf Course in Reno/Tahoe Area
Grizzly Ranch is hands down my favorite course in all of Reno/Tahoe (I've lived in Reno since 2003). In the summer of 2020 my family and I bought a second home on the 9th hole and it was the best decision we've ever made. Having a home that is outdoors and on a golf course, yet is still only 45 minutes away from Reno where we call home, is absolutely amazing.
The golf course, though challenging, is very forgiving for the average golfer, which makes it fun every single time I play. Prior to purchasing my home I regretfully had never played the course before. After playing that first time I think I was able to play 15+ more times throughout the rest of the season. I have 3 small children, so being able to introduce them to golf and having them learn how to play at Grizzly is something I am very much looking forward to. Every single person I have brought along with me for the weekend is absolutely blown away that this magnificent course is right in our backyard. The course layout, the amenities, the staff...everything is absolutely amazing!
For anyone considering getting a place up in this area...do it! I promise you won't regret it.
Bring Your Big Boy Pants
Bag drop staff was very helpful. Pro shop guys were great. Craig, the starter, was both very helpful and let us tee off earlier than our actual tee times.
Incredibly nice course, but very tough. My brother and I played 54 holes from the green tees (~6800 yards). 600 yard par 5's but also some par 4's that were ~300 yards. Really fun and picturesque track. Highly recommended!!!!
I want to give a special shout out to the group of 4 old men in front of us and the group of 3 old men in front of them. You guys were both really bad and really slow. You should seriously consider giving up the game of golf or least move up three tee boxes. Watching you play golf was painful. It took us almost 5 hours playing behind you. It took us 5-1/2 hours to play the other 36 holes we played.
Afternoon round in the trees
Course conditions were terrific, 4 of us really enjoyed our round up there this year. In the trees but gives you enough room off the tee. Mix of Short & Long par 4s and 5s, greens were good when we played. Pro and staff very friendly. Afternoon sun filtering through the trees made for great day.
Terrific
Second round of the day. Wasn’t sure if I would last all 18, but I did and enjoyed every minute! Conditions were absolutely marvelous! Grizzly Ranch is a course for all! Tree lined fairways but the fairways are wide! Greens were very good! (Not to many ball marks) a little on the speedy!
A few forced carries but manageable! Only a few blind tee shots!
No complaints here!
Great trac!
Epic
Started the day off with a round at Whitehawk and finished at Grizzly...Grizzly is an absolute gem. Excellent condition and beautiful scenery. I would put this course ahead of coyote, greenwood, and grays. Half as expensive is a bonus too. Only downside is it’s a little out of the way but with all the good courses in the area it’s enough to make a trip to play grizzly and somewhere else.
One of California's best
Grizzly Ranch is one of California's great courses. Here's the ironic twist: Its gorgeous setting of pines and wild terrain looks more like Colorado or Montana than the palm-tree-lined fairways you see on the more famous courses of the state.
Grizzly Ranch might be isolated an hour north of Truckee in the High Sierra mountains, but it's worth finding.
If you can survive the first six holes, you'll have a good time hunting down a solid score at the Grizzly. Three of the par 5s are downright mean, though. The third might be the hardest three-shotter I've ever played because of a daunting carry on the approach. Meanwhile, the 18th might be one of the prettiest, ending at an elevated green next to a water feature and covered bridge.
Fantastic Course
I heard that Grizzly Ranch had a beautiful course; I heard correctly. The course is built around a housing community of what appears to be vacation homes. The staff were friendly and the pro shop was clean and orderly. The carts were clean but lacked ice in the ice chest. They had no GPS so bring your own. The range was manicured, clean, and well-maintained. The fairways, rough, and greens were in great shape. The course architect provides scenic views from almost any location. Overall, I think this is a 5 star course. Looking forward to going back.

A great challenge
Played the "resort" (white) tees. At 6074 yds, long enough! Some really tough holes--12 has kicked my a** all three times I've played this one. Lots of canyon carries, some big elevation changes both up and down. Fair course, though. Rough is very tough--does not give up its dead easily. Bring lots of balls.
Great course, beautiful views
Played this sept 2012. I have White Hawk, Coyote Moon, Donner, Old Greenwood, this course rates very high and is my favorite of those, Old Greenwood close behind. I've read reviews of Grizzly and some really racked it, well those people are probably Hacks because this course is very challenging, was in tremendous shape and like the head pro said, this is White Hawk on Steroids.
Pristine Mountain Golf Course
Since Grizzly Ranch became semi-private I have played it numerous times. Each round is a wonderful experience complete with friendly staff and terrific views on each hole.
It's no wonder "Golf Digest" ranks Grizzly Ranch in the top 3% of "all" California courses in 2013.
Agree its a gem and better than the Tahoe courses, especially for value.
